Peristiwa Gerbong Maut

     Gerbong maut salah satu diantara gerbong maut yang pernah digunakan oleh militer Belanda, untuk mengangkut 100 orang tawanan pejuang-pejuang Indonesia, dari penjara bondowoso pindah ketempat tahanan Bubutan Surabaya, tepatnya pada tangal 23 November 1947 karena di perjalanan pintu-pintu ditutup/kunci mengakibatkan :

- Meninggal dunia : 46 orang

- Sakit payah Payah : 11 orang

- Sakit : 31 orang

- Sehat 12 orang

     Peristiwa ini merupakan bukti sejarah perjuangan Bondowoso melawan Belanda. Para pejuang Bondowoso yang tertangkap dimasukan kedalam gerbong kereta barang yang pengap dan penuh sesak untuk di bawa kepenjara Bubutan Surabaya. Setelah mendapat perintah langsung dari Komandan J Van den Dorpe, Kepala Penjara mengumpulkan semua tahanan yang telah tercatat namanya. Pada Sabtu, 23 November 1947, jam 04.00 WIB, tahanan yang tercatat dibangunkan secara kasar lalu dikumpulkan di depan penjara. Rincian tahanan adalah sebagai berikut: :

- rakyat desa (20 orang), 

- kelaskaran rakyat dan gerakan bawah tanah (30 Orang), 

- anggota TRI (30 orang), dan 

- tahanan rakyat serta polisi (20 orang). 

     Pada jam 05.30 WIB tahanan tiba di Stasiun Kereta Api Bondowoso. Sebanyak 32 orang masuk gerbong pertama yang bernomor GR 5769; 30 orang ke gerbong kedua yang bernomor GR 4416, sisanya berebutan masuk ke gerbong yang terakhir bernomor GR 10152 karena panjang dan masih baru. Setelah menempuh perjalanan selama 16 jam, Gerbong Maut sampai di Stasiun Wonokromo. Jam menunjukkan pukul 20.00 WIB. Setelah didata :

- Gerbong I No. GR 5769 sebanyak 5 sakit keras, 27 orang sehat tapi kondisi lemas lunglai, 

- Gerbong II No. GR.4416 sebanyak 8 orang meninggal, 6 orang sehat, dan,

- Gerbong III No. GR. 10152 seluruh tawanan sebanyak 38 orang meninngal dunia semua. di Monemen gerbong maut di depan Pemerintah daerah kabupaten bondowoso atau persis selatan alon-alon Bondowoso yang menjadi obyek wisata setiap hari minggu disini ramai di kunjungi

Pertempuran TNI vs Militer Belanda di Bondowoso

Di kota Bondowoso  Telah terjadi pertempuran yang sengit antara TNI melawan Tentara Belanda. TNI dan Rakyat Bondowoso saling bahu membahu mengusir penjajah dari kota Bondowoso. TNI melakukan perang gerilya. Tepat pada tanggal 22 Juli 1947, Kota Bondowoso mendung dalam kedukaan. Didalam pertempuran itu gugurlah pahlawan bangsa, yang bernama :
- PRA SUTRIJO,  
- KOP SUDADI,  
- PRA SASMITO,  
- PRA JAIS.  
dengan semangat dia bertempur sampai akhir hayat.
Bangsa yang besar adalah bangsa yang mengahargai Pahlawannya.
